Enrollment is up at Cameron University this semester.
Enrollment for the spring term has increased 1.8 percent from last spring. Records show that 3,400 students are currently taking classes at Cameron, up 60 from a year ago. Along with the bump in enrollment, the amount of coursework taken by Aggie students showed corresponding growth, increasing 1,017 hours – up more than 3 percent – to 34,484 credit hours.
“We are thrilled to have the largest student credit-hour increase at Cameron University for a spring semester in more than a decade,” President Shane Hunt said. “This success reflects the incredible work of our enrollment management team, as well as faculty and staff across campus."
Part of the growth is attributed to students who are concurrently enrolled at area high schools while also taking classes at Cameron. Concurrent enrollment – which enables teenagers to get a head start on earning a college degree while still in high school – jumped 7 percent from the previous spring. There are 789 high school students concurrently enrolled in Cameron coursework.
Another factor is growth in two other key areas, first-time freshmen and transfers from other colleges and universities. First-time freshmen enrollment is up 10.1 percent, and there are nearly 20 percent more transfer students on campus this semester.
“I am especially proud of the dramatic increase in the number of first-time freshman and transfer students at CU this spring,” Hunt said. “These numbers highlight our momentum, and the positive impact Cameron is having on our students and the economic future of southwest Oklahoma."
Cameron offers classes in a number of traditional and online formats across nearly 50 different degree specialties, including 15 programs that can be completed entirely online. Enrollment for the summer and fall semesters opens on March 24.
