Now that Cameron University alumni Eli Angiel, Dalton Chase and Desmond See have walked across the stage during last Friday’s Commencement, each is now able to pursue a license in mechanical engineering through the Oklahoma State Board of Licensure for Engineers and Surveyors. But their Commencement walk took place at the University of Oklahoma, not Cameron Stadium.
Thanks to a 3+1 agreement between OU and CU, students who successfully fulfill degree requirements during three years at Cameron and one year at OU earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from OU. While completing the coursework for the 3+1, students also earn their Associate inApplied Science in Mechanical Engineering from Cameron.
Angiel, Chase and See are the first three CU students to complete the OU program under the agreement, which was established in Spring 2023.
“This 3+1 pathway allowed these three Aggies to continue their higher education seamlessly,” says Dr. Kyle Moore, chair of CU’s Department of Chemistry, Physics and Engineering. “State licensure for mechanical engineering is limited to applicants who earned baccalaureate or master’s degrees from programs that are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. With only five accredited programs in the state – including that at OU – Cameron’s partnership with OU for this transfer pathway provides an additional route to licensure.”
The universities work closely to ensure alignment of their respective engineering curricula so that students can smoothly transition while keeping the A.A.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering fully embedded. Students receive dedicated advising and support services at Cameron. One semester prior to transfer, students enjoy a tour and advisement day at OU to ensure a smooth transfer process. This also helps students make informed decisions about their academic and career goals.
There are several semesters in the typical degree plan where students will be enrolled at both universities. Courses unique to the University of Oklahoma are offered via distance learning methods, supported by Cameron faculty.
