Cameron University Sports and Exercise Science program enhances fitness capabilities with new metabolic cart; low-cost assessments available to community members

Cameron University has added a new resource to the Department of Sports and Exercise Science’s Exercise Physiology Lab, a facility that is utilized to train students how to assess and analyze various aspects of physical fitness. The Korr CardioCoach Pro metabolic cart measures oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production by the human body, allowing for accurate measurements of resting metabolic rate (RMR) and cardiorespiratory fitness.

The equipment plays a vital role in teaching students about energy expenditure at rest and during exercise. Students will gain meaningful hands-on learning experiences that will improve their understanding of the science behind human metabolism.

Community members as well as CU students, faculty and staff are invited to schedule an assessment for their own benefit. The non-invasive RMR assessment is considered a key metric in understanding individual calorie needs.

“Whether someone is considering weight loss, muscle gain or are just generally interested in their health, the metabolic cart will provide accurate results that can be the key to unlocking sustainable results,” says Bryson Hughes, faculty supervisor of the Exercise Physiology Lab. “Resting metabolic rate testing measures how many calories you burn and provides insight into your unique calorie needs. For example, if your goal is weight loss and your metabolism is measured to be slow, say less than 1,200 calories per day, then your weight loss journey may look different compared to someone else’s. This means you can get more targeted recommendations based on your data, which may lead to better results over time.”

To schedule an assessment, which includes a review of the results, send an email to brhughes@cameron.edu. After an appointment is scheduled, clients will receive guidelines as to pre-assessment food and beverage consumption, exercise and more. Upon arrival, clients will sit for 5-10 minutes to attain a near-resting state. During the test, clients will stay seated or lay down and breath through a tube for up to 20 minutes. Appointments last approximately 30 minutes and cost $35. CU faculty, staff and students receive a discounted rate of $25. Cash payment must be made upon arrival.

The RMR assessment is designed to provide accurate and precise results; however, results should be used for general inquiry only and not used as a diagnostic test or for medical treatment.

Funding for the Korr CardioCoach Pro metabolic cart was provided by the Coach Ted Owens Lectureship, the Gladys “Slats” Patton Endowed Lectureship, the Joanne Hudson Endowed Lectureship in Health and Physical Education and the Southwestern Medical Center Endowed Lectureship in Sports and Exercise Science. Funding was also provided by an internal innovative instructional grant.
