Cameron University’s Department of Communication, English and Foreign Languages will host award-winning filmmaker Loren Waters for a film screening and talk at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19.
During the event, Waters’ Academy Award-qualifying short documentary, “Tiger,” will be screened. The film was recipient of the short film special jury award for directing at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, and has been recognized at more than a dozen film festivals.
“Tiger” chronicles Indigenous artist Dana Tiger’s decades-long journey of resilience from a 1980s boom to a near collapse, as she and her family transform grief and hardship into the revival of their iconic Tiger t-shirt.
Waters is an award-winning Cherokee and Kiowa filmmaker whose creative work spans directing, casting and producing. Growing up in Oklahoma has shaped her cross-cultural storytelling, rooted in Indigenous experiences and community collaboration.
Waters has contributed to renowned films and television series, including “The Lowdown,” “Reservation Dogs” and “Fancy Dance.” A member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, her work has been showcased at such festivals such as Sundance, SXSW and Hot Docs.
Waters has been recognized on prestigious lists, including Forbes’ 30 Under 30 and Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces, and she currently serves as the executive director of the Lindy Waters III Foundation, where she is dedicated to serving Native youth and Indigenous communities.
Her achievements have been recognized with honors, including the 2026-2028 Tulsa Artist Fellowship, the Princess Grace Film Honoraria Award, the New York Foundation for the Arts – Anonymous Was a Woman Environmental Art Grant, and the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation LIFT Award.
Funded through the Holmes, Morris & Newell Endowed Lectureship in Classic Film, the event is free for the public and takes place in the Mary Lou & Cary Johnson Auditorium in Cynthia S. Ross Hall on Cameron’s Lawton campus.
