Mother Nature rains on celebration for CU grads; ceremony to finish May 11

For a little while, it looked like Cameron University would finish its annual Commencement Friday night under cloudy skies, complete with a fireworks show. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans.

After about two-thirds of grads had crossed the stage, the wind picked up, the raindrops started and soon became a downpour. Then the lightning began.

A significant number of grads wanted to stick it out to the end, but university officials – concerned over possible lightning dangers – placed the safety of the students and their families first and terminated the ceremony.

Understanding the disappointment of remaining graduates, Cameron has announced that it will conclude Commencement during a ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m. May 11 in Aggie Gymnasium.

The alternate ceremony had already been scheduled to honor several Aggie athletes who were forced to miss Commencement because of their participation in Lone Star Conference activities. Now, that ceremony has been expanded to accommodate those who were deprived of the opportunity to accept their degrees Friday night.

Any grads who missed their big moment are invited – and encouraged – to participate in Monday’s ceremony and accept their diplomas from President Shane Hunt. The ceremony is open to friends and families as well.
