Mark your calendars for one of the oldest holiday traditions in southwest Oklahoma – the performance of “Handel’s Messiah,” presented by the Lawton Schubert Music Club and the Cameron University/Lawton Civic Choir. For the 84th annual presentation, the event moves to the Lawton High School Auditorium, 601 N.W. Fort Sill Blvd., on Saturday, December 13, at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.
The Lawton Schubert Music Club initiated the first performance of “Messiah” in Lawton in December 1941. Presented in a variety of settings, it has become a performance tradition during the Christmas season in the greater Lawton/Fort Sill area. The stage will be filled with a chorus of more than 80 singers representing 30 different church congregations and orchestra for this year’s performance.
Featured soloists include CU alumni Alyson Hays Bishop and Kirk Prucha, CU adjunct professor Khalil Cabrera-Tosado and community members Tia Johnson and Thea Mills. “Messiah” is conducted by Doris Lambert, adjunct instructor at Cameron University and director of choral music at the New Post Chapel.
“Messiah” was composed by George F. Handel for chorus, soloists and orchestra. The one-hour performance will feature selections from each of the three portions of the Biblical text lyricized by Charles Jennings, representing the prophecy, the life, death, resurrection and promised return of Jesus Christ.
