CU retains ‘military friendly’ designation

Cameron University has retained its designation as both a Military Friendly® School by G.I. Jobs magazine and a Military Spouse Friendly® School – designations it has repeated earned for offering specialized support for the military community Lawton-Fort Sill and southwestern Oklahoma.

Ratings were determined by combining Cameron’s survey scores with the assessment of its ability to meet thresholds for student retention, graduation, job placement, loan repayment, persistence (degree advancement or transfer) and loan default rates for all students and, specifically, for student veterans.

“Since we’re located near Fort Sill, Cameron is an ideal choice for service members and veterans seeking to continue their education, offering tailored services to ease the transition from active duty to higher education,” said Vicki Henson, CU’s Veterans Affairs coordinator. “We stand out for our dedicated staff, generous credit transfer policies and strong ties to the local military community.”

Cameron’s commitment to active duty military, veterans and dependents is multi-faceted, Henson noted, and is demonstrated in a number of ways:

• Application fees are waived for active duty service members.

• Test administrations fees are waived for active duty military members for tests such as CLEP, DSST or proctoring for other schools besides Cameron.

• Free military credit evaluation.

• Military and military dependents in Oklahoma can attend CU at its in-state tuition rate.

Cameron has been certified as a Yellow Ribbon school by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for jointly covering out of state tuition charges for eligible students. The university participates in the Military Spouse Career Advancement Portal and federal Financial Assistance Program by working closely with spouses of active duty military personnel to help them take advantage of these financial benefits.

Cameron also recognizes the recreational and cultural needs of military families. It welcomes military families by offering a variety of free and reduced-admission activities to such things as athletic events, concerts, theatrical events and lectures.

Additional services include Vet Fest and the Veteran/Military Resource Fair that bring a variety of veterans-related resources and organizations to campus, scholarship opportunities, career support and hosting federal VA processors to assist with claims processing. Academic support is provided in the form of tutoring, academic and career advising, counseling, and assistance in applying for financial aid and veterans’ benefits.

Henson also pointed out that Cameron is home to the only federal VA VetSuccess on Campus Counselor in Oklahoma. Other military-friendly opportunities include a VA work-study program, military-related service projects, social events and veterans’ cords for Commencement are donated by the Lawton chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
