The Lawton/Fort Sill Interdenominational Ministers Alliance and Cameron University will jointly sponsor a public forum featuring candidates for the Lawton City Council later this month. The forum will take place in the Cameron University Theatre at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20.
Organizers have invited candidates seeking election to represent Wards 1, 2, 6, 7 and 8. More than a dozen incumbents and challengers have filed for those seats, and most have accepted the invitation to participate.
The two-hour event is designed to provide voters with an opportunity to hear the candidates discuss issues facing the City of Lawton and share their priorities before the upcoming municipal election on Tuesday, Aug. 25.
"We encourage every resident to take advantage of this opportunity to hear directly from the candidates and make informed decisions at the ballot box," said Bishop John Dunaway, president of the ministers’ alliance. "An informed electorate is essential to a strong and engaged community."
For Cameron, it’s an opportunity to take an active role in helping voters become more informed, and more engaged.
“All of us at Cameron University are very thankful and proud to be part of the Lawton Fort Sill community and we are excited to host this city council forum,” said CU president Dr. Shane Hunt. “Providing a venue for city council candidates to share their priorities with voters will help citizens make their decisions this fall.”
The forum will cover a wide range of issues affecting local residents, including candidate’s views on the City of Lawton’s budget, taxes, economic development, housing, public safety and quality of life, among others.
The audience will have an opportunity to submit questions for consideration during the program, allowing residents to engage with candidates on issues important to the community.
The forum is free and open to the public.
