Cameron University’s Military Veterans Resource Fair aimed at service members, veterans and dependents




Active members of the U.S. Armed Forces, veterans and dependents are invited to Cameron University’s Military Veterans Resource Fair slated for Wednesday November 5, and Thursday, November 6. The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the first floor of the McMahon Centennial Complex. The building is located at University Drive and D Avenue in Lawton. Visitor parking is available across the street.

“Cameron’s Military Veterans Resource Fair will feature a vast array of resources for veterans, active military and dependents,” says Vicki Henson, assistant director of financial services and coordinator of CU’s Office of Veterans Affairs. “The event will help ensure that those constituents have access to a comprehensive list of services and programs.”

Participating organizations and the topics/resources they provide include:

• American Legion – Post 6

• Comanche County Veterans Council (activities and partnerships to ensure uniform, protective programs for veterans, spouses, widows/widowers, minor children, and other veterans)

• Disabled American Veterans, Chapter #56 (accessing the full range of benefits available to veterans)

• Gold Star Wives of America (survivor issues on both the federal and state levels)

• Lawton Vet Center and Lawton Mobile Vet Center (readjustment counseling and information resources to veterans, focusing on services that help veterans make the difficult transition between military and civilian life)

• Medicine Park Aquarium & Natural Sciences Center (Thursday only – 10 a.m. to noon).

• Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs (claims assistance, appeals with claims before the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, ODVA will have 5 specialists available to assist with claims.

• Oklahoma Women Veterans Organization – Lawton/Fort Sill Chapter (numerous services for Oklahoma women veterans)

• Oklahoma Works―American Job Network (veteran services)

• Paws with Love Therapy Dogs, Inc.

• Redlands Veterans Upward Bound program (free college-prep program)

• The Red Cord, an organization that joins individuals and organizations within the community and surrounding communities of Lawton with the end goal of wiping out the injustice of human trafficking.

• U.S. Army Recruiting Station

• Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5263 (numerous programs and services, which include ensuring that veterans receive entitlements)

• Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1193 (numerous programs and services, which include ensuring that veterans receive earned entitlements)

Cameron University will have numerous campus offices/organizations participating as well. They include:

• George D. Keathley Department of Military Science (Army ROTC, Army Green-to-Gold program)

• Office of Student Support Services (offering academic support services to Cameron students who have academic need, are first generation, have an economic need, or students with disabilities)

• Office of Veterans Affairs (general information about utilization of VA educational benefits)

• Student Veterans of America chapter (activities and services)
