Cameron University professor’s artwork to be featured in national juried exhibitions

Artwork by Jack Crouch, an assistant professor in Cameron University’s Department of Art, Music and Theatre Arts, will be featured this fall in two national juried exhibitions in Texas, highlighting the national reach of his ongoing studio practice in painting and figurative art.

Crouch’s work has been selected for exhibition in the 10th annual “CCAN 10 National Juried Art Exhibition” at the Center for Contemporary Arts in Abilene, and “Contemporary Figures: A National Juried Exhibition” at the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts (LHUCA) in Lubbock.

The CCAN 10 exhibition opens Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Center for Contemporary Arts, 220 Cypress St. in downtown Abilene. The opening reception will take place from 5-7:30 p.m., with a champagne welcome at 5 p.m., with the exhibition doors opening at 5:45 p.m. The exhibition features artwork selected from artists across the country and will award more than $7,000 in prizes.

Crouch’s second exhibition, “Contemporary Figures,” is presented by LHUCA and focuses on contemporary approaches to the human figure. The national exhibition examines the body and its relationships to environment, society and technology, bringing together artists working in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, mixed media and sculpture. The exhibition runs through Nov. 28.

For Crouch, the exhibitions provide an opportunity to continue developing and presenting his work as a practicing artist while bringing recognition to the creative work being produced by Cameron faculty.

“My studio practice is centered on the figure and, in particular, the psychological relationship between the artist and the sitter,” Crouch said. “Painting and drawing provide a way to explore both the physical presence of a person and the more elusive aspects of identity, emotion and human experience.”

Crouch joined the CU Department of Art, Music and Theatre Arts in 2021. He teaches courses in drawing, painting and printmaking and maintains active painting and printmaking studios as part of his teaching and professional practice.

His recent exhibitions include “A Figurative Practice” at the Leslie Powell Gallery in Lawton held earlier this year, and “An Exploration of the Figure” at the Contemporary Art Center of Peoria in Illinois in 2024. His artistic practice focuses primarily on expressive portraiture and figurative painting and drawing.
