New Cameron University President Shane Hunt knows first-hand what it means to be a first-generation college student and how that achievement dramatically changes the trajectory of a graduate’s life. Wanting to ensure that other Oklahomans have the same experience, Hunt has provided the funding that allows the Cameron University Foundation to establish the President Shane Hunt First Generation Scholarship.
The endowed scholarship will be available to any full-time Cameron freshman or sophomore from Oklahoma who is the first person in their immediate family to attend college and who has the intent to complete a college degree at CU. Its purpose is to support first-generation college students at Cameron University in pursuit of their educational goals.
“As a first-generation college graduate who grew up in this state, I can speak firsthand about the transformative power of public higher education in Oklahoma,” Hunt says. “I am thrilled that this scholarship will provide support for a first-generation Cameron University student each year to help generations of CU students achieve their academic goals and build a brighter future for themselves, their families and the state.”
Hunt proudly notes that all of his degrees, from high school through his Ph.D., have been a result of public education in Oklahoma. A graduate of Westmoore High School, he attended the University of Oklahoma, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. After completing his MBA at OU, Hunt worked for a Fortune 500 company in Tulsa, where he spent eight years as a pricing analyst, product manager and business development manager before completing his Ph.D. at Oklahoma State University.
Hunt became Cameron’s 18th president on June 30. A marketing professor, he previously served as Dean of the College of Business and Michael C. Ruettgers Professor of Marketing and Vice Provost for Entrepreneurship and Economic Innovation at Idaho State University.
