The Cameron University Department of Social Sciences has honored students as outstanding majors in political science, history, sociology, criminal justice and social studies education. A new member was also inducted into Phi Alpha Theta, the national honor society in history.
“These outstanding students were selected by faculty members based on academic achievement, service to the department and the university, and their promise as graduates,” says Dr. Lance Janda, chair, Department of Social Sciences. “We anticipate that each will find success in their chosen field and look forward to following their forthcoming achievements.”
Xavier Childers, a senior from Levelland, Texas, was recognized as Outstanding Student Major in Sociology. Recognized for outstanding coursework, genuine interest in critical thoughts in sociology and persistent efforts at learning, Childers is regarded by departmental faculty as an inspiration to sociology majors.
Ozias (Ozzy) Diaz was named Outstanding New Major in Social Studies Education. A junior from Lawton Diaz began taking classes at Cameron as a concurrent student. He was recognized for his diligent work ethic, natural curiosity and the contributions he makes to his classes. He is active in History Club and is described by faculty as a delight to have in class
Lori Edwards, Duncan, received the Outstanding Alumnus Award. A 2024 graduate who earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history, Edwards now teaches at Rush Springs Public Schools. She is also pursuing a Master of Education degree at CU. Edwards has remained as dedicated to this department as an alumni and graduate student as she was as an undergraduate. She has shared valuable input on classes from the perspective of a professional educator, helping faculty members know what material to enforce in the classroom to help students once they’re outside of the classroom. She attended Travis Childs’ spring break trip to offer her own knowledge of history to the participants and to learn more to share with her own students.
Jordan Forns, Hillsboro, Texas, was named Outstanding Graduate in Political Science. Faculty members refer to Forns as “a delight to have in class” and add that she has been fully dedicated to her degree since she first enrolled at Cameron. She was recognized for her dedication to learning in the classroom and commitment to her assignments and professors throughout her whole degree process.
Williams (Bill) Jordan, Lawton, received the Outstanding Major in Social Studies Education award. A veteran of the US. Marine Corps, Jordan was cited as an exemplary student whose professors commended him for his understanding of history and his ability to communicate his knowledge in a thorough and professional way. He has used the teaching skills he developed in the Marines and in his Cameron classes, to become an impressive social studies educator. teaching with confidence and content knowledge that inspires his students to actively engage with the lessons he teaches.
Victoria Kitner was recognized as the Outstanding New Major in History for her earnest attitude towards history. She continually proves herself by sitting in the front of classrooms, offering insightful discussion points and kickstarting many learning moments in class. Her professors have sung her praises since she became a major. Kitner is a sophomore from Lawton.
Casey Wilk, a junior from Elgin, was named Outstanding Major in Criminal Justice. She has earned a certificate in Criminal Justice Essentials and is on track to complete associate and bachelor’s degrees within the next year. Wilks recently completed the Lawton Police Department's Citizen Police Academy.
Lydia McLennan, Geronimo, was inducted into Phi Alpha Theta.
