Cameron University Department of Psychology names Students of the Year




The Cameron University Department of Psychology honored five students with Student of the Year awards during its departmental student recognition ceremony.

Maximiliano Espinosa, Lawton, was named MSBS Behavioral Sciences Student of the Year. A member of the U.S. Army attending CU through the Green to Gold program, Espinosa discovered a deep passion for psychology during his undergraduate years at California State University, Stanislaus. That passion has given him a meaningful way to better understand both himself and those around him. He has served as the treasurer for the CU chapter of Psi Chi, the national honor society for Psychology, and has been an excellent student in all of this classes. After graduating, he will return to active duty with aspirations of joining the Army’s Medical Service Corps, where he hopes to support the health and wellness of his fellow soldiers.

Mikel Ann Blann, Lawton, was recognized as the MA Mental Health: Counseling Major of the Year. With a record of excellence in and out of the classroom, Blann was described as a high-achieving student who exceeded expectations in her academic work. In her clinical practicum experience, Blann represented the embedded drug and alcohol treatment program by being one of the first students to complete a practicum experience working with a local drug and alcohol treatment facility, Catalyst Behavioral Health.

Katy Kinder, Faxon, was honored as MA Mental Health: Marriage and Family Major of the Year. Kinder was recognized for clinical competence, ethical commitment and for presenting work that reflects the highest standards of academic excellence. Through coursework, clinical practicum, and service to the field, Kinder has shown a deep understanding of systemic and relational dynamics, as well as a remarkable ability to apply theory with compassion, cultural humility and integrity. Faculty members refer to her as “a leader among peers, a thoughtful advocate for clients and a shining example of what it means to approach this profession with both heart and intellect.”

Juhi Patel, Lawton, was named BS Psychology Major of the Year in recognition of her grades, classroom engagement and dedication to the field of psychology, all of which were described by faculty members as exemplary. Patel illustrates the level of professionalism, character, and potential that warrants the recognition that this award is designed to provide.

Kaitlyn Rollins, Elgin, was recognized as BS Family and Child Studies Major of the Year in recognition of her outstanding academic performance and deep engagement with her coursework. Her insightful responses to assignments consistently demonstrate critical thinking, compassion and a genuine commitment to supporting children and families. She has particularly excelled in her child development courses, which have fueled her passion for helping children thrive. Rollins plans to continue her education by pursuing a master’s in social work, where she will no doubt continue to make a meaningful impact.

Psi Chi, the national honor society for psychology, welcomed the new members during the 2024-25 academic year. Students who have granted permission to have their names pubished listed by hometown.
