Middle schools girls who are entering 6th, 7th or 8th grades in Fall 2023 and who have an interest in mathematics, aerospace and other STEM disciplines are encouraged to apply for Cameron University’s Applied Mathematics and Aerospace Engineering Summer Academy. The residential academy is scheduled for June 4-9 on Cameron’s Lawton campus. There is no charge to participate. Only 12 students will be accepted.

To apply, go to https://www.cameron.edu/chem-phys-eng/beyond-the-classroom/aerospace-engineering-academy. The application deadline is May 1, 2023. Notification of acceptance into the program will occur after May 10, 2023.

The academy agenda will include sessions on free fall, gravity, hot air balloons, rockets, physics and flight and more. Activities include the design, creation and testing of simplified rockets, as well as visits to Science Museum Oklahoma and Frontier City.

All project supplies and equipment, instruction by CU faculty, and meals will be provided. Students will check in on Sunday, June 4, and will reside in the Shepler Center dorm for five nights. Activities will be held in the Sciences Complex. On Friday, June 9, parents and family members are invited to watch the students launch their rockets, then stay for lunch and follow-up activities, including an academy quiz bowl.

The Applied Mathematics and Aerospace Engineering Summer Academy is funded by the Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission, the Trent Patton Endowed Lectureship, and the Clarence Page Endowed Chair in Mathematics and Science Education.
