Academics

Cameron University is committed to your student's academic success. We offer services to help your student register for classes. find a major, and be successful in their academic career.

Academic Advisement

Every student should see their advisor at least once each semester, and more often if they are experiencing difficulty. Advisors are very knowledgeable about the sequence of courses and additional requirements for graduation. Advisors are also critical in guiding each student to accept responsibility for their personal growth. Freshman, undecided, and new transfer students are assigned to professional advisors in the Academic Advising Center. These Advisors work with students to identify the appropriate major for their stated goals and create individualized educational plans for academic success. More information about the Academic Advising Center can be found here.

Once your students is ready to leave the Academic Advising Center, they will work with your student's major department to assist them as they transition to their departmental advisor.

If your student does not know who their advisor is, they can check Aggie Access and it lists their advisor there.

Choosing a Major

Choosing a major that will lead to a career is often a very difficult task, and the best advice for your student is to be patient. It may take one or two semesters, sometimes longer, before a student feels comfortable with deciding on a major or making career decisions, and that is actually a good thing. A university education is, after all, a process of discovery, and you want your student to take the time to find a major that suits their talents and inspires them to excel.

Encourage your student to visit the Career Services Office early in their college career. The office has many resources to guide them in making choices that match their personal interests and career goals. More information about the Career Services Office can be found here

Faculty, too, are very instrumental in guiding students to make good career decisions. Encourage your student to visit with faculty in their field of interest.
