Chemistry Labs

Physical Chemistry Lab

Our Physical Chemistry I and II lab courses are intended to acquaint and expose our students with a variety of experiments covering a wide range of physical chemistry topics such as thermodynamics, kinetics, molecular spectroscopy, polymers, quantum mechanics and simulation studies. Students gain familiarity with numerous physical chemistry instruments and experimental measurement techniques which help them in developing unique laboratory skill sets to work independently and in groups. The laboratory experience helps them to describe experimental results and how to perform quantitative and qualitative data analysis adequately. Finally, the experience in the Physical Chemistry Lab help the students to develop the ability of scientific communication through presentation and written reports. All of our labs contain a safety shower and an eye wash station.

Organic Chemistry Lab

Our Organic Chemistry Lab provides students an opportunity to gain knowledge of structure, properties, compositions, reactions, and the preparation of carbon-containing materials. Our lab contains microwaves for organic synthesis. Our labs also contain three rotary evaporators so each of our lab benches has its own. The lab also contains eight vacuum hoods for work with volatile or hazardous materials. Each of our lab benches has its own vacuum pump for filtration and distillation. Our two adjacent labs house our two NMR instruments, two infrared spectrometers, melting point apparatuses, and refractometers, which students use for characterization of organic compounds.

General Chemistry/Intro to Chemistry Lab

Our Introduction to Chemistry Lab provides students with the opportunity to become acquainted with the fundamentals of chemistry through introduction to a large number of laboratory techniques.

Our General Chemistry Lab provides students with an elevated, yet general knowledge of the world of chemistry. Students are introduced to techniques that they will refine or master in subsequent laboratory courses. Also, this lab contains six fume hoods for work with volatile or hazardous materials.

Quantitative Chemistry and Chemistry of Water/Wastewater

Our Quantitative Analysis Lab provides the students with the opportunity to gain the knowledge and understanding of applying methods used for determining an amount of a chemical found within the sample. The lab also provides students hands-on experience in a wide variety of analytical methods and techniques. In this lab, students master titrimetric methods, spectrometric methods and gravimetric methods.

Our Chemistry of Water/Wastewater Lab also provides the students with an opportunity of gaining the knowledge and understanding of determining the chemical composition in water samples collected from streams, wells, water and wastewater treatment plants. In this lab, students reinforce titrimetric methods, spectrometric methods and gravimetric methods employing standard methods of water analysis at water and wastewater treatment plants.  Adjoining this laboratory is an analytical balance room and an instrument lab containing thirteen research grade instruments described on our Resources page.

BioChemistry Lab

Our Biochemistry lab provides the students with an opportunity to gain knowledge and understanding of chemistry at a molecular level. The lab consists of eighteen lab bench spaces with access to an autoclave, a centrifuge, a shaker, an incubator, and a cold room. Students are introduced to and master the techniques widely used in Biochemical research.
