Handshake is CU’s university-wide job board system where students have access to search and apply for part-time jobs, internships, co-ops, and full-time career opportunities. Thousands of jobs, internship and career opportunities are posted in Handshake as well as information on upcoming career fairs and on-campus recruiting events.

SET UP YOUR PROFILE
Handshake is designed to provide you a personalized experience. The more Handshake knows about you, the better it can deliver relevant content to meet your needs and interests, make sure to visit your career interests page in Handshake to receive more specialized content.
There are 5 key areas in building a complete profile
- Your career interests including:
- Type of position: This is where you let employers know you are looking for an internship, full-time or part-time job
- Types of jobs: Instead of listing thousands of individual job titles, Handshake groups job titles into roles and job functions
- Location: Cities where you are interested in living and working
- Industries and sub-types
- Work and volunteer experiences: Put your internships, on-campus student employment on campus and volunteer service
- Organizations and extracurriculars: Employers sometimes search for students by their membership in particular clubs, so list your organizations and activities
- Skills: Add skills that you believe you can demonstrate proficiency in, and add as many as possible. Be very specific and focus on technical skills you have since these are the skills employers will most commonly search for when searching for candidates
- Documents: You can save versions of your resume and cover letters, as well as other documents, on Handshake. When you’re ready, consider saving your most recent copy of your resume in your Documents section as “Public”, this allows employers to view your resume
PROFILE VISIBILITY AND PRIVACY SETTINGS
Handshake was designed to be a social network to democratize opportunities for students. Handshake allows you to configure your profile visibility where you can be “found” by employers (they can search for you by major, skills, experiences) and other students. The most important thing to know is that you are in control of what you share on Handshake. It's also important to know that some features are restricted based on your profile visibility. The three levels of visibility (a.k.a. privacy settings) are:
Community: Your profile will be visible to employers, students, and registered alumni across all of Handshake, including other education institutions. You'll be able to message students and alumni who have similar interests or experiences.
Employers: Your profile will be visible to employers. You may receive messages about potential job opportunities.
Private: You'll be able to apply for jobs but won't get contacted by any employers before applying.
EXPLORE AND APPLY FOR JOBS & INTERNSHIPS
On any given day, you may see more than 15,000 active internship and job postings on Handshake. These internships and jobs are also likely posted to 1,000+ other campuses. This means it can take a lot of time to look through opportunities and that you are competing with thousands of other students. Simply applying might not get you many results. Learn how to research employers, find contacts, and make a personal connection.
To make the most of your time, here are some tips:
- Search the " Cameron University collections" -- these are curated groups of employers and internship/job listings that we (in the SEC) have highlighted that may be of interest to CU students
- While you are searching for internships, be sure to follow employers so that you can receive email updates when they schedule events, register to participate in career fairs, or post jobs. Simply click the "follow" icon next to any employer. You can also find employers using filters like location, size, industry, and more
- Make sure your profile is complete, including the things listed above. Handshake uses machine learning algorithms to curate the jobs that appear at the top of your results to best match your interests
In addition to Handshake's job search tool, be sure to check Handshake's blog from time-to-time to learn about which employers are hiring.
NETWORK WITH OTHER STUDENTS
Did you know that Handshake is also designed as a social platform? Use the People tab on the left to search for students who:
- Have worked for employers you are interested in and ask them about their experiences
- Are members of similar clubs and organizations at other universities
- Are studying the same major as you, and get inspiration for skills you can add to your profile by seeing what they have included in their profiles
