What is PLUS?

Presidential Leaders AND University Scholars

We believe students learn a great deal through leadership training and involvement in campus and community activities. Therefore, in order to maintain the PLUS scholarship, the student must participate in leadership training, obtain leadership experience through community service, be involved in a campus organization, and participate in campus events during the fall and spring semesters.

LEADERSHIP TRAINING

First Year

The focus of the First Year is to assist the entering freshmen PLUS students with the transition from secondary education to higher education. The first semester of the freshman year all participants will enroll in Introduction to University Life. The course will cover such topics as:

  • Goal Setting
  • Time Management
  • Stress Relief/Anxiety Management
  • Procrastination
  • Career Exploration
  • Leadership Skills

Second Year

The focus of the Second Year is to further look at leadership styles and theories. Students will study ethics in leadership, group dynamics, problem-solving, and decision making. Second Year scholars will learn about different ways to help our communities, such as writing for grants to help fund service projects. It is our goal that a student will have a thorough understanding of various aspects of leadership.

During the spring semester, Second Year scholars will enroll in Foundations of Leadership, a two-hour Organizational Leadership course that details the theories of leadership.

Third and Fourth Year

During their Third Year, students will learn more about career development and life after university. Discussions may cover such topics as:

  • Resume writing and cover letters
  • Interview and networking skills
  • Job Shadowing
  • Internships
  • Graduate School
  • Career Fairs

Third Year scholars will experience how their academic majors can be applied to experiential learning opportunities as they continue to develop their leadership skills.

During their final year in PLUS, students will focus more on leadership in action. They will reflect upon and apply the leadership knowledge and skills gained during their time in the PLUS program. They will visit with leaders who will share insight and advice as our Fourth Year class prepares to graduate.
