Academic Advising Center

Welcome to Cameron University’s Academic Advising Center, a central location for academic information and resources for students. In addition to providing advising services to all new Cameron students, we help students find the right major that meets their academic goals and interests. We are committed to providing timely and accurate advice for students so they succeed academically.

As a new student, you will be assigned an advisor based on the major you choose. Of course, if you meet an Advising Specialist whom you really like, you can choose to work directly with that specific individual.

You will also have a chance to meet and be advised by some of Cameron University’s faculty. These faculty are full-time instructors from the different majors who have dedicated time specifically to work with students in the Advisement Center.

Once you are ready to leave the Advisement Center, we will work with your major department to assist you as you transition to your departmental advisor.

HELPFUL HINTS

Getting the most out of academic advising:

  • Get to know your academic advisor. Your advisor is your advocate, someone who works to help make your time at Cameron University friendly and trouble-free. The better your advisor knows you, the better he/she can help you get the most out of your educational experience.
  • Ask questions! Advisors are here to answer questions as you have them. University policies can be complex, difficult to understand and hard to find. Advisors know most of them already and know best how to use information resources to get you the best answer.
  • Be active in your academic advising. Be prompt and prepared for your advising appointment.

How to prepare for academic advising:

  • Bring a list of classes you want to take.
  • Bring a schedule of those classes.
  • Write down your questions so you don’t forget and bring them with you.
  • Bring the documents from your previous advising appointments.

What are the student’s responsibilities?

  • To give your advisor accurate and honest information.
  • To schedule and keep appointments. If you will be late or can’t make it, be courteous and call the Advisement Center to let the advisor know.
  • To establish the agenda for the advising appointment.
  • To learn about University policies by browsing the catalog.
  • To be open to advice. Sometimes advisors will bring up new ideas to try which may very well make your experience even better.

What are the advisor’s responsibilities?

  • To listen.
  • To be prompt. Under normal circumstances, students should expect a response from their advisor by the end of the next business day.
  • To establish and develop the relationship with the student.
  • To provide contact information.
  • To keep office hours.
  • To keep scheduled appointments. In the event an appointment needs to be canceled, we will contact you.
  • To give students information about academic services and resources available to the student.
  • To help the student define academic & career goals.
  • To interpret complex university policies for the student.
