Cameron University staff members selected to receive Pickaxe Award

Cameron University staff members Lisa Armstrong and Kay Means are the recipients of the 2019 Pickaxe Awards, which recognize full-time Cameron employees whose performance is above and beyond expectations. Armstrong is the Accounting Clerk/Typesetter in the CU Print Shop, and Means serves as Assistant Director in the Office of Admissions. Each received a $1,000 stipend and a commemorative award.

The award recipients have made a contribution and/or commitment that has resulted in a significant difference to Cameron students, visitors, or other employees, or whose commitment to their job responsibilities, department, or the university stands out as a clear example to all other employees. Award recipients must have been employed full-time at least one year at Cameron. Nominations were made by Cameron students, faculty and staff. Recipients were selected by the university’s Executive Council.

Armstrong was recognized for the “excellent customer service to both employees and students,” as cited by one nominator, who mentioned her willingness to go above and beyond as well as her positive attitude. Another nominator said of Armstrong that she shows the most professional and personal customer service among staff members at Cameron. That adjunct faculty member cited Armstrong’s role in his teaching effectiveness, writing, “I have never been disappointed in her ability to serve the students and my teaching goals for the classes I teach.”

Means was recognized for her multi-layered responsibilities, her management of the recruiting team, and her drive to improve Cameron’s positive presence in southwest Oklahoma. One nominator wrote, “Kay works hard to do what needs to be done without a complaint. She understands that the big picture is most important and does her best to improve everyone’s experience while they are at Cameron University.” Another nominator wrote of her commitment to the success of students at Cameron and called her “an exceptional, hard-working, dedicated, creative, organized, caring, helpful individual who approaches each situation in a professional and gracious manner.”
