Original musical comedy by Cameron professor honored with national award

"The Juries," a musical theatre comedy written by Cameron University's Dr. Greg Hoepfner, Professor of Music, has been honored with a Merit Award in the Music Theatre category by the 2014 International Composers' Competition sponsored by the Boston Metro Opera (BMO). With that distinction, "The Juries" will be performed during BMO’s 2014-15 production season. The Merit Award recognizes works that demonstrate unusual content, a unique voice and/or distinctive compositional talent.

Focusing on the trials and tribulations of vocal students and their end-of-semester evaluations - juries - by a panel of four professors, "The Juries" is Hoepfner's first musical comedy. He wrote the music and lyrics; the book was written by his daughter, Helen Hoepfner. The show was first presented publicly in a showcase in February 2013.

The International Composers' Competition is part of the Boston-International Contempo Festival, which is widely regarded as one North America's most important venues for new works in opera, musical theatre, choral music and art song. For the 2014 competition, a panel of judges evaluated more than 625 works by composers from six continents and over 120 countries.
