Cameron to host 500 high school students during annual Agriculture Interscholastic Meet

The Cameron University Department of Agriculture will play host to approximately 500 high school students representing 70 high schools from throughout Oklahoma during its annual FFA Agriculture Interscholastic Meet on Wednesday, April 9 and Monday, April 22. The event helps agriculture students hone their skills in areas ranging from practical animal science and agronomy to leadership and business while preparing for the state FFA competition. Cameron has hosted the Ag Interscholastic Meet for more than 50 years.                          

“The Department of Agriculture is pleased to continue this Cameron tradition, which serves the agriculture leaders of tomorrow,” says Dr. Leon Fischer, Chair, Department of Agriculture. “As participating high school students prepare for the state competition, they also have the chance to visit the Cameron campus to become acquainted with our facilities, programs, faculty, staff and current students. It’s a great opportunity for them to learn what Cameron offers as they begin to explore higher education.”

On Wednesday, April 9, participants will assemble at 8 a.m. at Cameron Stadium for a welcome assembly. After receiving instructions, they will disburse to individual competitions at various points around the Cameron campus. Competitors will demonstrate their knowledge in a variety of topics including Meat Judging, Field Crops/Agronomy/Seeds ID, Farm Business Management, Floriculture, Livestock Judging, Food Science/Technology, Dairy Foods, Land and Pasture /Evaluation Judging, Agricultural Communications, and Entomology. Both individual and team awards will be presented.

On Monday, April 22, the department will host the Southwest District FFA Public Speaking beginning at 1 p.m. with a welcome and Parliamentary procedure instructions in the Shepler Ballroom. Beginning at 5 p.m., contestants will present speeches in the areas of Agri-Business, Agriculture Policy, AgriScience, Animal Sciences, 8th Grade Agri-Exploration, 8-9-10th Grade Believe in Oklahoma Agriculture, Extemporaneous, FFA Creed, Natural Resources, 9th Grade FFA Opportunities and Plant Science. Individual awards will be presented for each of the speaking topics.
