Cameron University invites participation in new CU Student Veterans of America chapter

Cameron University is organizing a chapter of Student Veterans of America (SVA), a national coalition that provides military veterans with resources, support and advocacy needed to succeed in higher education and post-graduation. Cameron students, faculty and staff, as well as interested community members, are invited to attend one of two organizational meetings on Thursday, March 8. The meetings will take place at 12:30 p.m. and at 2 p.m. in the Buddy Green Room of the McMahon Centennial Complex on the Cameron campus.

“We hope to establish an active SVA chapter on the Cameron campus that will coordinate programs for veterans, provide pre-professional networking, and generally provide a touchstone for student veterans in higher education,” says Jennifer Holland, Vice President for Student Services. “While active membership is limited to enrolled students, we encourage anyone who wishes to support our veterans to participate in the organizational meetings. Hopefully, members of the community will want to be involved in advisory or mentoring capacities.”

Today's veterans face numerous obstacles in their path of attaining a college degree. When coupled with the visible and invisible wounds of war, a college degree can be an elusive goal for men and women returning from military service. The mission of SVA member chapters is to provide a peer-to-peer network for veterans who are enrolled in higher education. Each local group plays a critical role in ensuring that every veteran is successful after their service.

“Cameron is committed to providing a top-quality education at an affordable cost to our nation’s veterans,” says Holland. “Because of our proximity to Fort Sill, Altus Air Force Base and Sheppard Air Force Base, Cameron proudly serves veterans from all military branches. In addition, many of our faculty and staff members are veterans themselves, giving them insight into the challenges members of the military face when transitioning to civilian life.”

SVA is a national organization has more than 500 chapters on university campuses across the country.
