Cameron University team takes honors at national competition

The Cameron University Mediation Team of Elon Allen, Lina Colon and Steve Haber, was named Best First Year Team and claimed other honors during the 13th Annual National Intercollegiate Mediation Tournament, sponsored by the InterNational Academy of Dispute Resolution, last weekend. The team competed against more than 40 teams from colleges and universities from across the country.

“We are thrilled with the results, given that this was the first year that Cameron has participated in this national competition,” says Gary Kowaluk, Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice. “The team brought home numerous medals, three trophies and compliments from some of the nation’s top mediators for their negotiating skills.”

Allen, Colon and Haber, all criminal justice majors from Lawton, placed third nationally in the Mediation competition and fourth nationally in the Client/Advocacy competition. Allen placed fifth nationally as an individual mediator. Team alternate Patrick Zickefoose of Claremore participated as both a mediator and advocate as well as serving as Team Advisor during the Final Round of competition.

The InterNational ADR Society is a student-run organization established to create greater awareness of mediation and the impact it is having on the courts and on society generally.
