Cameron University invites alumni and friends “Under the Big Top” for Homecoming 2012

Cameron University alumni, friends and supporters will gather “Under the Big Top” for Homecoming 2012 from February 24-25 for a variety of events that will give classmates the opportunity to revisit their Cameron experiences. Activities on tap include a bonfire and pep rally, basketball and baseball games, the third annual Aggie Fun Run/Walk, presentation of the annual Cameron University Alumni Association Awards, and the gala Athletics Hall of Fame banquet. New this year is a chuck wagon cook-off pitting Cameron alumni, headed by Representative Don Armes, against a student contingent led by the Aggie Club and the Department of Agriculture.

On Friday, February 24, Cameron athletic boosters will join current and former star athletes and supporters for the Fifth Annual CU Athletics Hall of Fame Reception and Banquet, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the McCasland Ballroom of the McMahon Centennial Complex. This year’s honorees are volleyball player Hilary (Baggett) Hubert, football/track star James Colbert, football players and coaches Charlie Dean and Leroy Montgomery, football player Robert Whitman, basketball standout Jo Tashuda, and long-time booster Carl “Tuffy” Roberts. Dinner tickets are $30 and must be purchased in advance from the Office of Alumni Relations, 581-2988.

Following the Hall of Fame induction, the excitement moves outdoors as CU students present and past join faculty, staff and fans for a bonfire and pep rally at 8:30 p.m. The action takes place south of Cameron Village.

On Saturday, February 25, get your day off to a running start by participating in the Aggie Fun Run/Walk, an energizing run/walk around the Aggie Mile. Check in at the Cameron University Fitness Center, then walk or run at your own pace for either one or three miles. Participants will receive a free t-shirt, and refreshments will be served. The action kicks off at 8 a.m.

The class of 1962 will celebrate their golden anniversary during the Aggie Family Coffee at 10 a.m. They will reminisce with Aggies from all graduating classes as well as CUAA Award winners. Stop by the McMahon Centennial Complex to check in, then take a stroll down memory lane with your fellow Aggie alumni.

Former and present CU volleyball players and supporters will convene at 10 a.m. at the CETES Conference Center for a reunion brunch.

At 11 a.m., the Aggie Family and Friends Awards Lunch takes place in the McCasland Ballroom of the McMahon Centennial Complex. During this festive occasion, the Class of 1962 will receive their Golden Associate Medallions, and the Cameron University Alumni Association will honor inductees into the Faculty Hall of Fame and recipients of the Distinguished Alumni Award and the Outstanding Young Alumni Award. Tickets are $15, and advance reservations are required. Call the Office of Alumni Relations at 581-2988 to register.

Cameron’s George D. Keathley Department of Military Science will host a special reunion for former Army ROTC cadets beginning at noon in Burch Hall. The gathering will feature refreshments, giveaways and a current overview of Cameron’s nationally recognized Army ROTC program.

Aggie spirit gets into full swing at the annual tailgate party beginning at 12:30 p.m. with a chuck wagon cook-off near the Aggie Gym. Cameron alumnus Don Armes, Clyde Hill and Terry Davis and their Snake Creek Cattle Co. chuck wagon pit their cooking skills against Bar CU Ranch’s chuck wagon, led by Dr. Leon Fischer and the Cameron Department of Agriculture. Bragging rights are at stake, so come sample the tasty offerings and cast your vote for the winning dish.

At 2 p.m., the Aggies women’s basketball team tips off against West Texas A&M, followed by the men’s team taking the court at 4 p.m. Attendees of the volleyball reunion will be introduced during halftime of the women’s game, and the new inductees into the Athletics Hall of Fame will be recognized between games.
