2017 Summer Academy

2017 CU Engineering and

Applied Mathematics Summer Academy

June 24 –30, 2017

The 2017 CU Engineering and Applied Mathematics Summer Academy will be a one week (7 day, 6 night) residential enrichment program hosted by Cameron University. Scheduled for June 24 – 30, 2017, the academy will be held on CU campus. The main focus of this academy will allow students to study and experiment with wind turbine systems by considering various wind turbine blade designs and how they influence turbine power production.

A Vernier Windmill will be used to demonstrate multiple turbine blade designs and their respective efficiencies. After research and observation of the data, students will have the opportunity to design their own blades to test with the Vernier Windmill and measure the voltage produced at different wind speeds. Following the Engineering Design Process, students will research, design, test, and redesign their blades. Next, using their newly designed blades, students will build a renewable energy phone charger. The final project will include a design competition of the phone chargers based on set criteria, and a PowerPoint presentation where students reflect on their design process.

Tentative Academy Schedule:

Day 1 – Check In, Get Acquainted Games, Self-Defense Interactive Training, CU welcome.

Day 2 – Travel to Stillwater to gain soft skills at the OSU Outdoor Adventure Challenge Course.

Day 3 and 4 – 2 Learning sessions, detailing wind energy and power.

Day 5 – Field trip to wind farm, and afternoon session: understanding the engineering design process, initial team designs.

Day 6 – revise team designs, test, and compete.

Day 7 – Close, student presentations, academy jeopardy, catered lunch, check out.

Each day will include meals and evening entertainment for academy participants.
