Personal Information
My undergraduate degree is in chemical engineering. I did my
graduate studies at Texas Tech and finished my Ph.D in Finance in 1988. I also
have professional certification in Cost Accounting. I have an active research
agenda in Corporate and Personal Finance and have published papers in journals
such as Financial Management, Financial Review, Managerial Finance,
Financial Practice and Education, and Financial Services Review.
Interesting Sites
The Internet serves as an excellent data source for
information of all kinds. The data sources, or home pages, which give extensive
information on business and corporations are of
particular relevance to the courses I teach. Given below are some of the
business and finance related websites I like.
- Yahoo - This
is a good starting point for a search on business topics. Check out
the Yahoo finance page (http://finance.yahoo.com)and
the extensive corporate data available through this site.
- Reuters - A very good site
for research about individual companies. Registration is required, but it
is free. Some reports require fees.
- The Money magazine home page -
The Money magazine home page provides reports on over 400 companies. The
reports are periodically updated and are called Company reports. One can
access the reports by clicking on the square marked Company Reports. The
reports are listed alphabetically.
- The SEC EDGAR - The Securities
Exchange Commission (SEC) has an electronic filing system in place for
most of the required corporate filing of information. The SEC has a home
page which makes most of this information available to the public. The
system, known as Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval
(EDGAR) system is accessed through the Internet and includes most of the
10K and 10Q reports. These reports give you up to date financial
information on companies. The data for any company can be searched by
company names.
- The Economist - The British
newsweekly with a strong American bias and arguably the best international
economic and political weekly.
- Financial Times - The British
Financial Times newspaper homepage provides global business
information and commentary.
- Quicken - A very useful personal finance
website.
- Smart Money - Another financial
periodical, which gives a lot of useful information. According to
Dave, one of my students - "It offers a graphical representation of the
market entitled “Map of the Market”. At a glance, you can gauge
market price volatility by a color code. This is designed to allow
you to compare companies within similar industries and industries
against industries."
