Play within a Play

Please don't make this difficult.  This writing convention simply means that the characters are performing a play within the play.  It is a form of metatheatre.

In Michael Frayn's farce, Noises Off, some of the characters perform another play entitled Nothing On.

During the first act, which this photo is from, we see the final dress rehearsal of Nothing On.

In the second act, we turn the set around so that the audience can witness what is happening backstage, while a performance of Nothing On is happening.

In the third act, we turn the set around again and Nothing On has disintegrated because of all of the infighting amongst the cast.
