In this writing convention, the audience through
the eyes of a character are able to see scenes from past before the time
in which the play began.
In John Olive's The Voice of the
Prairie, the character of David flashes back to his youth.
This includes a young girl he met named Frankie, who is blind.
Years later, during the time in which the play, is set David meets Frances Reed (Frankie).
The picture illustrates the flashback as David remind minds Frances of their former past in the background as Davey and Frankie act out that remembrance.
