Modern English Novel Course Description: This course is
an in-depth survey of the novel in English from the late
Victorian period to the present. Course Objectives: This course is designed to provide students with an overview of the history of the British novel since 1890. The class will address such issues as the nature of modernism and postmodernism, the relationship between text and social context, the connection between popular and elite literary forms, and the novel's response to twentieth-century literary theory. Required Texts:
Course Requirements: Students are expcted to complete all reading assignments by the time of the class for which they are listed on the syllabus. Some additional reserve reading may be assigned. Students will be required to do an in-class presentation. Written work will include a reading journal, a paper, a midterm, and a final. Maintained
