DR. CHUCK TUMLINSON
Chuck Tumlinson is Director of Jazz Studies
and Associate Professor of Trumpet at Washburn University. He received
his Bachelor's degree in Music Education from Wichita State University
and Master's and Doctoral degree from The University of North Texas . As
a jazz performer he was featured as the jazz trumpet soloist with the North
Texas State University One O'clock Lab Band and has appeared at the Wichita
Jazz Festival, Kool Jazz Festivals, and The Kelowna Jazz and Blues Festival
in British Columbia, Canada. He has appeared with the Count Basie Orchestra,
Mark Murphy, Bobby Shew, Dizzy Gillespie, and Steve Gadd. His music has
been recorded by the UNT One oclock Lab Band, the University of Northern
Colorado Lab I, the Kansas City Boulevard Big Band and the Trilogy Band
of Kansas City and is published by Walrus Music, the University of Northern
Colorad Jazz Press and Malletworks Music. He has served as Principal Trumpet
of the Wichita Falls, Texas Symphony and also performed with the Wichita
Symphony, and the Ft. Worth Symphony and Opera Orchestras. As a teacher,
he was the faculty advisor for a Downbeat Magazine "DeeBee" award winning
group. Former students of his have played with the Count Basie Orchestra,
the Maynard FergusonOrchestra, the Dukes of Dixieland, and the U.S. Army
Blues Band. He is also the Editor of the Jazz Clinic Column for the International
Trumpet and. is now the newly-appointed chair of jazz studies at California
State University-Fullerton.
