John Moots has been a member of the Cameron University Music Faculty since 1974, and has served since that time in the Lawton Philharmonic Orchestra, where he is the principal trumpet and has served as brass section leader. It is in the role of performer and director that John is best known to the to the faculty and community of Cameron, Lawton, Ft. Sill and Southwest Oklahoma. He is director of the Cameron Jazz Ensemble, which has featured in concert figures such as Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson, Clark Terry, and Count Basie, among others in the Cameron Jazz Festival. The Country Jazz Fusion has been one of the most successful Fine Arts ventures of the past few years, featuring members of the Cameron Jazz Ensemble and guest artists Johnny Gimble, Jethro Burns, Mark O'Connor, Buddy Emmons, Vassar Clemens, Buddy Spicher, and others from Nashville.

As a performing musician John also performs with the Texoma Brass Quintet and is an active member of the International Trumpet Guild performing with the Festival of Trumpets Concerts in Santa Barbara, California, College Park, Maryland, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Akron, Ohio. As principal trumpet of the Lawton Philharmonic Orchestra John has been featured as a trumpet soloist with the orchestra, performing the Haydn: Trumpet Concerto in Eb during the 1993-94 season. With the unionization of the L.P.O., John was elected as chairman of the players committee, member of the conductor search committee, and member of the programing committee. John has also performed with the Oklahoma City Orchestra and the Wichita Symphony Orchestra.

His students have been recipients of the Presser Award and the Leslie Powell Award, the highest scholastic/performance awards given by the Music Department. He has been a successful recruiter for the university through private studio lessons. He has contributed to the reputation of Cameron University through the selection of his students to the Oklahoma Youth Orchestra, The Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute, and the All State Band and Orchestra.

John is also an active member of the Lawton community, sharing his talents with a number of civic groups, including the Leslie Powell Foundation (Brown Bag Lunch Series), The First Baptist Church, the D.A.R. and the Community Concert Board as a performer. In May of 1992 John was awarded the outstanding teacher in the Cameron University School of Fine Arts, and in June of 1992 was the trumpet teacher at the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute. In January of 1993 John was awarded the Lawton Arts & Humanities Council 1992 Educator in the Arts. In 1989 nominated and elected to the Cameron University Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi (Academic Organization) and became life member of Phi Kappa Phi in 1998.

John's education includes graduate work at The University of Oklahoma; Master of Music Education and Bachelor of Music Education, Wichita State University, Wichita, Kansas, and additional study at the Aspen Music School, Aspen, Colorado. John has also taught public school in Norman, Oklahoma; Valley Center and Belle Plaine, Kansas.

In addition to his service to the university and community, John has willingly contributed to the arts, specifically music education, in southwest Oklahoma. It has been said that to be recognized one should toot your own horn; John toots his own horn, but only musically.
