Writing #3
Paris
is often thought of as one of the most important cities of the
Enlightenment, itself an obviously urban phenomenon. That said,
as David Garrioch makes quite clear, Paris was a city with many sides,
and not all of them showed signs of change that we could associate with
the Enlightenment. Choosing two of the social groups that
Garrioch treats (the poor, the bourgeois de Paris, the nobility, or the
artisans) and two of the transformations (i.e. two in total that you will use to
examine the experiences of both of the groups you analyze)
he discusses (1. policing and protest, 2. the
public sphere, 3. religion and secularization, 4. planning and urban
integration, 5. social life [including membership in associations like
freemasons' lodges] and consumerism) argue for or
against the notion of Paris as an Enlightenment city. Your paper
is to be
5-6 typed, double-spaced pages in
length. Papers are to be typed in Times Roman font with a 12-pt.
pitch and must be appropriately footnoted (please see me before writing
a paper if you have questions about these standards) and you should use
only Garrioch as a source. Good luck!
The main entry for the first footnote of Garrioch should be formatted
as follows: David Garrioch, The
Making of Revoutionary Paris (Berkeley, CA: University of
California Press, 2002), [insert only the number of the page(s) you are
referencing].
