Reaction Paper #4c: Winners and Losers in the Global Economy


For your final essay I would like you to address Susanne Friedberg's book French Beans and Food Scares.  Your essay should be two pages in length, typed and double-spaced. You should also use standard 1-inch margins all around, and 12 pt. Times New Roman font. In addition, you must document what you write with footnotes. For more on footnoting (a 25% reduction on your paper will occur if you fail to document your work properly)and some tips on writing historical essays, see as before the general guidelines for writing section of the course syllabus. And now....on to the topic .....  

Your essay should consist of the following sections:

1. An introduction in which you indicate the position whether you will argue for which of the two attempts to globalize agricultural production (Burkina Faso or Zambia) is most successful and, briefly, why.

2. A presentation and comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of efforts to globalize bean production in Burkina Faso.

3. A presentation and comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of efforts to globalize bean production in Zambia.

4. A conclusion in which you explain in some detail why you think either Burkina Faso or Zambia has been most successful in its efforts to globalize agricultural production.


The first or main-entry footnote should be formatted as follows: Susanne Friedberg, French Beans and Food Scares: Culture and Commerce in an Anxious Age (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2004), [insert number(s) of page(s) here].

Thereafter all notes should use the abbreviation Ibid. as your only source for this paper should be French Beans and Food Scares.

Please Note: The paper may be submitted as late as Tuesday, May 6th for full credit, but papers submitted after Friday, May 9th, 2008, as agreed in both sections of the course, will receive a zero.
