Source Essay Proposal
All source papers for History
4963 must begin with a formal paper proposal. All proposals
should be between 400 and 600 words in length and, when appropriate,
they should use footnotes, though you need not use footnotes in those
sections where there is no reason to.
Major Sections:
- Description of Research Subject: Identify
and describe the group(s) or individual(s) on whom you will focus in
your essay. In this section include information on which of the
crusades you will focus or, if your paper will cover a broader period
than that, indicate that. Please include the years involved as
well. Discuss as well, in brief, the role of your chosen
group(s)/individual(s) in the broader event context that your paper
addresses.
- Description of Research Major Theme or Focus: The
goal of this paper is to study one aspect of a group or individual's
experiences in a crusade or a segment of the crusading era c.
1095-1205. Therefore you need to define that here in your
research proposal. Ideally this section should consist of a
short, three- to five-sentence description of what you currently think
the main focus of your paper will be. Make this focus as specific
to the group or individual you are studying as possible. The more
specific, the stronger the foundation for your paper.
- Description of Major Source: A brief three- to
five-sentence description of the source you plan to use followed by a
discussion of how your chosen source will support research into four to
five sub-themes related to your major topic that you can demonstrate,
either by glossing or quoting your chosen source.
- Additional Sources Needed: A discussion of
whether or not you anticipate that other primary or secondary sources
will be needed and how you plan to acquire access to these within the
next two weeks.
- Submitting Your Work: As with all
other work, please submit this proposal through the Paper Submission
Portal.
