History 1113

Informal Writing #3

In Worlds of History and Life along the Silk Road as well as in our discussions in class we have discussed the position of women in the various societies we have examined.  What has emerged is that within any given society specific gender roles, i.e. roles for men and for women that are culturally defined, emerged.  Furthermore, it is apparent that to understand these societies it is important to comprehend these gender roles.  Using Worlds of History, pp. 154-176 and what you have learned in Life along the Silk Road, compare and contrast women's gender roles and/or societal position in Greece, c. 750-300 B.C.E., China, c. 300-900 C.E., and India after the Vedic period.  In the case of China be sure to take account of the impact of nomadic societies on women's posibilities.
