III of the quiz (worth 5 points)
- Both Classical India and Qin/Han China had states that have been described
as empires, i.e. both had centralized governments. Compare and contrast the
degree of centralization in these two societies in the classical era. Be as
specific as you can with regard to the means by which centralization was achieved.
- According to Bentley and Ziegler, the social order in Indian society became
more complex in the classical era. Which force was most important in driving
this change, caste or economy?
- According to Bentley and Ziegler religion in India during the classical
period became more responsive to a broader section of the populace. Explain
how Jainism, Buddhism and Hinduism met this challenge and indicate which of
these religions was most responsible for sparking the change.
