Colonialism Game: The Trial of Max Havelaar

Using the character to which you have been assigned determine which of the objective sets below would be appropriate for you. Read the goals and objectives page for that objective set and write a memorandum to be submitted to the Court Convener (me) in class as early as March 13 but not later than 10:00 a.m. on March 25. With this paper your objective is to present evidence to the court to achieve an outcome that is beneficial to you. Therefore, you need to find evidence in Multatuli's Max Havelaar to support your position. Also, be mindful in writing up your argument that others will argue against you or provide evidence that may contradict yours. As with the first two papers your memorandum must be at least two pages in length, typed, double-spaced and in Times New Roman font with 1-inch margins all around and should be footnoted appropriately (a 25% reduction on your paper will occur if you fail to document your work properly). Good luck!!

This written paper will be the basis of the arguments you will make in the trial of Max Havelaar during weeks 11 and 12. Please note failure to attend any of these meetings will result in a 5% reduction from the grade on the paper, each day's attendance being worth 5% of the grade for Formal Writing #3.  Also, please note that failure to submit a rough draft by 10:00 a.m. of March 25 will mean you cannot participate in the Colonialism Game.   Since the speech is worth 10% of the paper mark, this would mean a total deduction of 25% should the rough draft not be in.

Tips for writing the paper:

1) Read through the "General Background" and the "Objective Sets" so that you understand what your character can and cannot do and what sort of arguments might work best.

2) Your "thesis" or main point in the paper should consist of the position you are taking in the trial, e.g. the regent is guilty/innocent because.....

3) After presenting your thesis provide evidence supporting it.  Your testimony cannot be effective if you simply assert or insist that your perspective is the right one.

4) The paper should be written in the first person since the testimony will be delivered in the first person during the trial and should be addressed to the court or the court convener.

5) Please note that 100% of your mark for this paper will be dependent on the written performance.

6) As you all will know, no one is allowed to turn in the next paper (the Max Havelaar paper) without first confirming with me that they understand the nature of the assignment.  If you have written a rough draft you are covered.  Otherwise you will need to respond to my e-mail or in-class query on this matter in order to be allowed to submit the paper.  If you have not spoken to me by Wednesday then the paper will not be counted as on time until you do.  Please keep this in mind!

Footnoting your paper:

The first main entry should read as follows:

Multatuli, Max Havelaar or Coffee Auctions of the Dutch Trading Company, translated with notes by Roy Edwards (London: Penguin Books, 1987), then the number of the page or pages used.  DO NOT USE pp., p., page, pages or anything remotely close to them.

All subsequent references will use Ibid. with the appropriate pages numbers indicated since the only source for this paper is Max Havelaar
