Research Interests

Student-Negotiated Teaching – Exploring the benefits of evaluating student work through open-ended commenting practices, allowing students to assume authority for their own education, and showing the humanity of the teacher in order to build student confidence.

Linguistic Evaluation – Exploring the risks and benefits of various ways in which teachers may consciously and subconsciously evaluate the progress of English language learners, particularly within the composition classroom.

The Underprivileged and Culturally-Disadvantaged Student – Finding ways to connect with students who struggle with discouraging circumstances in order to increase retention rates.

2008- 2009


 

Teaching Assistant and Writing Center Tutor, Western Kentucky University. Independently planned and executed instruction of college-level Introduction to College Writing courses. Enhanced students’ understanding of English composition through one-on-one tutoring.
 

2008


 

Office Assistant, Pyles Excavating, Inc., Columbia, Kentucky. Supported daily administrative and operational functions. Drafted and edited official documents for the president of the company, including employee manual.

Columnist and News Writer, Adair County Community Voice, Columbia, Kentucky. Produced two columns, multiple news stories, copy editing, layout/design, and photography under a demanding weekly deadline. Specialized in coverage of education and court systems, as well as local and state government activities.

Summer Staff, Loucon Training and Retreat Center, Leitchfield, Kentucky. Led youth activities that encouraged teambuilding, cooperation, and overcoming obstacles. Performed general clerical work and other operational duties as assigned.
