Event Descriptions for Volunteers
Set-Up Crew: These
volunteers will meet the day before the event to set up tents and supplies.
Registration Booth: Volunteers
will process liability forms, hand out participation numbers, explain policy
and procedures, tally up- school vouchers
Individual Time Trial: Participants on tricycles and bicycles, with
or without training wheels can test their strength and speed at this station.
Volunteers will help each cyclist position themselves up on the covered ramp
where the competition begins. Down the pathway, Volunteers will be waiting with
a stop watch to time the cyclists, post times, and sign off in each child’s
event log.
Drop the Pebble: Participants will pedal down a path to drop a
pebble into a container that is placed in the middle of the course. Participants must be riding (moving) when
dropping the pebble into the container.
Once they have completed the first run, they are handed another pebble
and do the same as they return to the starting line. Volunteers are needed to oversee this event
and sign off in each child’s event log.
Tire Changing Competition:
One by one, working against the clock,
competitors will remove the tube from the rim, insert a new tube and re-inflate
the tire. Children under 12 may be assisted by an adult. Volunteers will take time results, and sign
off in each child’s event log.
Best Decorated Bicycle:
Children decorate their bikes with a variety of
colorful materials (provided). Two
scheduled parades will allow children to show off their work. Volunteers will be needed to assist children
and coordinate parade. Volunteers are needed to oversee this event and sign off
in each child’s event log.
Tortoise Tango: Riders travel down their assigned lane as
slowly as possible, keeping their feet on the pedals at all times. The last one to the finish line wins. A cyclist who places a foot on the ground
prior to the finish line is automatically disqualified. Volunteers are needed
to oversee this event and sign off in each child’s event log.
Bike Rodeo: Children will participate in bike safety
programs that increase their knowledge and skills in bicycle riding. Volunteers
are needed to oversee this event and sign off in each child’s event log.
Crash Lid Hand-Outs: Volunteers are needed to hand out free
cycling helmets to children who sign a pledge to wear them whenever they ride
their bicycles.
Wrench Station: Volunteers will teach adults and children how
to make minor repairs to their bicycles, including the proper way to clean a
bike. Afterwards, Volunteers will sign off in each child’s event log.
Skutt Station: Skutt (scoot) is a wooden bike for children
ages 2 to 4. It has no pedals and no
training wheels. The Skutt is perfect
for learning balance, steering, coordination and independence. Volunteers are
needed to help participants try out the Skutt, and sign off in each child’s
event log.
Health Center: Volunteers will teach participants the
benefits of riding a bicycle and sign off in each child’s event log.
Bike Barrel Racing: Competition is similar to barrel racing
except that a bicycle is used rather than a horse. Volunteers will be needed to coordinate the
race by setting up barrels, explain rules, and take time. Volunteers will also
sign off in each child’s event log.
Tandem Rides: Participants will be allowed to ride as stokers
(ride at the back of a tandem). The ride
will probably be one block long. Volunteers are needed to oversee this event
and sign off in each child’s event log.
Huffy Toss: How far can you toss a bicycle? This is the bicycling version of the Olympic
shot put or hammer throw. Who hasn’t
felt like getting their aggression out and having some fun doing it? Volunteers will measure and record distances.
Face Painting Booth:
MGP Youth Advisory Council and MGP youth Volunteers
will paint children faces with appropriate paints, must have some painting
skills.
Clean-up Crew: These Volunteers will help close the event,
taking apart tents and carrying in supplies.
