Pauline R. Chaat Smith graduated from Cameron Junior College with an associate's degree in music. Her education continued at Oklahoma State University where she earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education and a master's degree in elementary education.
Smith's passion for education led to 24 years in the classroom and service as an equal opportunity specialist in the Office for Civil Rights in Cleveland and project manager for the Indian Education for Cleveland Public Schools. Throughout her life, Smith has been involved in volunteer service. From 1981-1983, she was the president of the American Association of University Women in Cleveland. She served on the Lake County (Ohio) Committee on Domestic Violence, the Ohio Department of Education Learner's Outcome Panel, and the Women's Law Fund Board of Directors. Paula was also appointed to the first American Task Force of the National Education Association, which led to the Indian Education Act of 1971. Smith has been the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the Career Woman of Achievement Award and the Tower of Strength Award. |
