Fall 2009

Student Support Services is proud to announce that Dawn Shilling and Thelonious Smith were recently initiated into Cameron’s Upsilon Xi Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, the international honor society in education. Only those who are committed to excellence in teaching are granted membership.

Spring 2009 President & Dean's list

SSS would like to congratulate the following participants for their excellence in education by making the spring 2009 Cameron University President’s or Dean’s List. To make the President’s List, students must be enrolled full-time (carrying at least 12 hours of classes) and maintain a straight A average (4.0). The Dean’s List requires a B average (3.00-3.99).

2009

SSS participant Suzanne Baker was recently named as the Webmaster for the Cameron University chapter of the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM).  With 575 affiliated chapters located all over the world, SHRM is a professional association which represents workers in the field of human resources.

SSS participants Joynita Hayes, Connie Mathis, and Leigh Shelton recently completed Cameron University's 2008-2009 CU Leadership Academy.  The CU Leadership Academy teaches members valuable leadership skills such as communication, financial management, marketing, elements of leadership, and personality traits.

SSS participants Brandon Clark, Wuanita Carroll, Kelly Chapman-Burns, Ciera Moore, Holly Neville, Eric Thomas, Marina Woodley and Oralia Jones were recently presented an award from the Cameron University Department of English and Foreign Languages for their excellence in written communication as well as development as a writer.

SSS participants Rhonda Kennedy and Dawn Shilling were recently inducted into Cameron University's Chi Eta Sigma chapter of Phi Kappa Phi.  Membership was by invitation only and is reserved for the top 10 percent of seniors and the top 7.5 percent of juniors.  Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest and largest all-discipline honor society.

SSS participants Youmasu Siewe, Harold Smith, Chris Allison, Rosalyn Cash, Arminca Goodwin Aaron Gutierrez, and Sylena Howell were recently nominated into the Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.  The Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities is a highly regarded and long-standing honors program that has been recognizing outstanding students for more than 60 years.

SSS participant Sylena Howell was recently presented Cameron's Top 10 award from the Office of Student Activities.  This award is for students over the age of 25 and is based upon grade point average, student activities, leadership, and honors.

SSS participant Ronna Bertram was recently inducted into the Criminal Justice Alpha Phi Sigma Honor Society.

SSS participant Kendra Collins was recently inducted into Cameron University's Gamma Chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon (PME).  PME is an honor society for mathematics with more than 200 chapters in the United States.

On Thursday, March 5, 2009 two Student Support Services participants will be inducted into Phi Eta Sigma.  This prestigious honor society requires a student to have a 3.75 cumulative GPA, be enrolled full time, and have completed between 24 and 42 hours.

On Tuesday, March 10, 2009, SSS participant, Carol Shelton, was inducted into Cameron's Delta Mu Delta Honor Society.  The Delta Mu Delta Honor Society is an honor society in Business Administration.  Inductees must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 and be in the top 20 percent of their college class.

On Wednesday, March 11, 2009, two SSS participants, Sandra Holmes and Thelonious Smith and SSS Director, Doreen Thomas traveled to the University of Central Oklahoma to hear an inspirational speaker and Vietnam War hero by the name of Dave Roever speak.  While serving in the Vietnam on a Navy Special Forces Unit, Roever was burned beyond recognition while attempting to throw a phosphorous grenade.  Roever miraculously survived and has turned his tragedy into a story of recovery and triumph.  Roever travels nationally and internationally speaking to military installations, public schools, universities, and youth conventions.  Roever has visited Iraq five times to speak to troops.

Student Support Services Honors Cameron Faculty, Staff, and Student Achievements

Cameron University recently held its annual Student Support Services (SSS) Leaders in Education and Opportunity (LEO) Awards ceremony to honor outstanding students, staff, and faculty for the 2008-2009 academic year. The LEO Awards were established by the CU Student Support Services program to honor those Cameron students, faculty, and staff who have given the most of themselves in support of program participants.

 

Ivanilda Silva received the SSS Alumnus Award, which recognizes a former CU student who was a member of the Student Support Services program and who has gone on to further his/her education and is successful in a career track. Silva graduated from CU in 2005 with a baccalaureate degree in Psychology; in 2008, she earned a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Oklahoma. Currently youth services director for the Mental Health Association of Central Oklahoma, she is also a coordinator for the Columbia TeenScreen program, a mental health prevention tool developed at Columbia University in New York. Silva plans to pursue certification in Dance Therapy with the goal of opening a dance studio to offer low income students a chance to vent in a creative and safe way.

 

Eight SSS students were named as recipients of the LEO Awards for their academic achievements while utilizing the SSS tutorial labs.  This year’s recipients were Michelle Oliver of Elgin, computing; Oralia Jones of Walters, Shane Mahmood and Christopher Thomas, both of Lawton;  writing; Talisa Miller of Lawton, science; Teena French of Lawton, reading; and William Shane of Lawton, math.  Oralia Jones and Christopher Martin of Lawton received recognition for their success utilizing the individual tutoring services.

 

Deborah Kolade of Abule, Nigeria received the award for Outstanding SSS Tutor. Recognized as Outstanding SSS Math Lab Tutors were Kendra Collins, Matthew McLaughlin, Talisa Miller and Larry Young, all of Lawton.

 

Dr. Michael Dunn, Associate Professor of Biological Sciences, received the SSS Outstanding Faculty Award, and CU Dean of Student Services Jennifer Holland received the Outstanding CU Support Staff Award.

 

During the awards presentation, current students Rhonda Killian, Marlow; Isabel Perez, Lawton; Debria Schuler, Temple; and Christopher Thomas, Lawton, provided personal tributes regarding their experiences in the SSS program. Outstanding peer mentors who received certificates of appreciation were Jutta Carter, Michelle Oliver and Thelonious Smith, all of Lawton.

 

Cameron University’s Student Support Services (SSS) program is a federally funded TRIO program designed to provide free academic support and personal enrichment to students who may face economic, social and cultural barriers to higher education. SSS offers academic advisement, enrollment, peer mentoring, free tutoring, financial aid information, special classes, and a variety of enrichment workshops and cultural activities to participants.

2007

Pedro Shaffino was recently inducted into Delta Mu Delta. Induction into the Delta Mu Delta Honor Society is by invitation only to business majors seeking a bachelor's or master's degree. To receive an invitation for membership undergraduates must have completed one half of the work required for the degree with at least a 3.25 GPA and be in the top 20% of their college class.

Jamie McGuire, senior history major, placed third at the annual Oklahoma Association of Professional Historians/Phi Alpha Theta National History Honor Society's regional conference on March 2-3, 2007 for her paper entitled, "Oklahoma: The Promise of a Racial Utopia for African-Americans."

Ashley Tausch, senior art major, participated in Cameron's annual senior art exhibition held on March 31, 2007. The annual exhibition allows art students to show their artwork along with gaining real-world art show experience. The annual senior art exhibit is a requirement for graduation.

Chinnie Burford had the opportunity to participate in the British Studies Program this summer. Burford, an English major, visited the Stratford upon Avon (home of Shakespeare), Oxford University, museums, and attended several plays including Romeo and Juliette. Allen Biffle, senior broadcast major, and Vincent Escalante, senior broadcast major, recently received awards during the Oklahoma Broadcast Education Association's recent student contest. Allen placed second in a music video, and Vincent placed third place for his participation in the documentary, "Unbreakabull".

Rhonda Kennedy, Dawn Shilling, and Thelonious Smith were recently inducted into Cameron University's chapter of Phi Eta Sigma honor society. Students eligible for membership must have completed 24 to 42 hours, be full-time, degree seeking, and have at least a 3.75 grade point average.

Danny Morris, senior music major, participated in Cameron University's Low Brass Studio on April 12, 2007. Danny is part of JB's Jazz Quartet and plays the bass.

Bonnie Page, was selected to be represented at the upcoming 2007 National Education Women's (NEW) Leadership Institute in Norman, OK at the University of Oklahoma. The institute is designed to encourage Oklahoma women to consider careers in politics or public service.
