With so much information available and with information changing so rapidly in our field, I believe that we must be facilitators for student learning. That demands that we give 100% to staying abreast of changes in our field and preparing for every class. On the other hand, students must respond by accomplishing every task demanded by the instructor, whether through the syllabus or orally in class. What we know about the research in learning urges me to provide students with notes that tell them what is important so they can participate in a learning dialog in class instead of attending lectures. I believe in Gagne's concept of providing opportunities for transfer as an event in an overall teaching stategy. I also believe students should be allowed to demonstrate knowledge by doing projects and explaining concepts. When possible, students should be able to use the same resources that they would find on the job whenever they are asked a question. Students come to us having virtually no knowledge of how people operate in the Instructional Design Technology field. It is up to me as an instructor to provide situations in which students learn how to learn as well as how to perform in a workworld environment.
