Middle school mathletes encouraged to attend Cameron University’s It’s MathE, a free mathematics and engineering enrichment program

Calling all middle school mathletes! Registration is now open for Cameron University’s It’s MathE, a fun and exciting mathematics and engineering enrichment program aimed at students in grade six through eight. The event takes place on Saturday, August 26, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Registration will be held in Room 100 of the Sciences Complex; activities will take place in Bentley Gardens, located on the south side of the Cameron campus. Registration is free and is limited to 100 participants. Attendees are advised to dress for outdoor activities. To register, email Irene Corriette at icorriet@cameron.edu or Dr. Sheila Youngblood at syoungbl@cameron.edu.

During It’s MathE, attendees will demonstrate their algebra-based problem solving skills in a series of team competitions. The program will kick off with fun get-acquainted exercises. After participants are split into teams, each team will develop a strategy to defeat a series of obstacles in competition. Each team will also participate in a rocket build and launch. The program will conclude with an awards ceremony.

Members of Cameron student organizations MathCom and CU Engineering Club will be joined by high school students who participated in the university’s recent Engineering and Applied Mathematics Summer Academy to serve as leaders and mentors to the middle-school students. CU alumnus Kyle Holman, a math teacher at Bray-Doyle High School, will also assist with the program, which is led by Youngblood and Corriette.

It’s MathE is designed to encourage middle school students to take all the mathematics classes available to them as they move through middle school and into high school. The program serves to encourage a solid foundation in mathematics that will propel the students toward continued success in STEM-related fields.

Cameron University’s It’s MathE program made possible by a Tensor SUMMA grant from the Mathematical Association of America.
