Cameron University, Fort Sill and the Marie Detty Youth & Family Service Center, Inc./New Directions Women’s Shelter have slated a series of events in observance of Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM). Throughout the month of April, each of the three organizations will be involved in numerous activities to provide information about sexual assault prevention, culminating with three dedication ceremonies on Friday, April 22.
The Fort Sill Office of Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention (SHARP) will have several locations across post to provide soldiers and civilians an opportunity to receive information and have an opportunity to place a ribbon in a container to be placed on a tree to be planted in support of SAAPM.
Cameron University will have an information table set up in the McMahon Centennial Center, staffed by volunteers, to hand out information and to provide individuals an opportunity to place a ribbon in a container to be placed on a symbolic tree in the hallway outside of the Student Wellness Center, which will present special events throughout the month.
Marie Detty-New Directions is presenting a Clothesline Project and a Silent Witness Display in preparation for a live tree dedication for the citizens of Lawton impacted by sexual assault. Advocates located at Central Mall in front of Dillard’s will be available to provide information and resources and to answer questions about sexual assault awareness month and these events.
On Friday, April 22, three trees will be dedicated to bring awareness to the topic of sexual assault awareness and prevention. Each of the trees symbolizes strength and growth in facing the issues associated with sexual assault.
Three brief dedication ceremonies, each open to the public, will take place on Friday April 22.
Cameron University will place a tree in Graybill Courtyard, located on the west side of campus adjacent to the CETES Conference Center, with a ceremony at 10 a.m. Cameron President John McArthur will be the featured speaker.
Marie Detty-New Directions will dedicate a tree on the east side of Elmer Thomas Park at 1:30 p.m. Mayor Fred Fitch will read a proclamation recognizing Sexual Assault Awareness Month in the city of Lawton. The ribbons will remain year round; starting an annual event to honor those impacted by sexual assault in our community.
Fort Sill will place a tree near Building 2934, Graham Resilience Training Campus on Marcy Road, across from the SHARP Resource Center, with a ceremony at 3:30 p.m. Major General John Rossi will be the featured speaker.
