Cameron University staff member Vicki Henson was honored with the Diana Davis Service Award for Excellence during the recent meeting of the Western Association of Veterans Education Specialists (WAVES) in Albuquerque, N.M. The award is presented to a WAVES participant who has demonstrated consistent vision, service and leadership in WAVES over an extended period of time.
Henson has served as Cameron’s Coordinator of Veterans Affairs, part of the Office of Financial Assistance, since August 1986. In 2015, she received the WAVES Past President’s Award and is also the 2003 recipient of the organization’s Bill Pearson Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2006 recipient of the President’s Award. She served as president of the organization from July 2013 to July 2015 and is now serving a two-year term as Past President. In addition to her commitment to WAVES, she is also active in the Oklahoma Association of Veterans Coordinators & Counselors. She has served three terms as that organization’s president and was presented with the OAVCC’s Marshall Webb Lifetime Achievement Award in 1992.
WAVES serves educational institutions of higher learning and those offering non-college degree programs engaged in the administration of veterans education benefits within the geographic areas served by the U.S. Office of Veterans Affairs Muskogee Regional Processing Office, which processes 48 percent of the national claims for V.A. educational benefit recipients. The territory includes 18 states, the U.S. Trust Territories and The Philippines. The organization also offers training nationally.
