Cameron University Students Win ADDY Awards; Bring Home First-Ever Gold Award

When 11 Cameron University advertising students journeyed to the recent 50th Annual American Advertising Awards (ADDYs) sponsored by the Oklahoma City Ad Club, they did so as nominees. When the evening ended, they were award winners. Two television commercials produced as part of an ad campaign for the Red River Best Chevy Dealers were honored with Addy Awards, with one being named Best Of University and moving on to the regional competition. The commercials were produced as a class assignment in Dr. Theresa Billiot’s advertising class during the Fall 2015 semester.

“Students had to work well together and creatively on a very small budget with limited resources to produce high-quality campaigns,” says Billiot. “When we spoke about working hard, we focused on working together while avoiding team conflict. They listened to each other’s ideas, respected each other and worked effectively as teams. When we spoke about creativity, we stressed integrating simplicity with the unexpected. Both teams did a great job applying this level of creative thinking into their spots. These awards not only showcase their hard work in my advertising class, but it also solidifies our students’ talents to have a competitive career in the advertising and marketing fields.”

Bradley Ferrell, Lewisville, Texas; Timothy Marsh, Lawton; Nicholas Pasternak, Kansas City, Mo.; Taylor Riddle, Magnolia, Texas; and Timothy Robinson Sr., Lawton, won the Student Gold Addy – the first ever won by a Cameron University entry - and the Best of University Award for “Wow.” The spot earned an automatic berth in the regional competition and can be seen at

Emmanuel Alfaro, Leina Alvarado, Joon Jeong, Raymond Nunez, all of Lawton; Kristian Sharkey, Cache; and Codey Upton, Dallas, Texas, earned a Student Silver Addy for their “Chevy Buddies” commercial. The concept was a spinoff on the 1980s TV comedy, “Bosom Buddies.” To achieve the look of the 1980s, the students applied the VHS effect into the spot. It can be viewed at

Each of the commercials was designed to promote Chevrolet to millennials. Both commercials were shot on the Cameron University campus.

The ADDY Awards recognize and reward creative excellence in the art of advertising.
