The Cameron University Staff Awards were created during the Fall 2014 semester at the recommendation of Cameron’s Staff Advisory Council. Nominations were made by CU students, faculty and staff. In order to be eligible, nominees must have been employed full-time at Cameron for at least one year.

“Cameron staff members have a tremendous impact on the success of our students,” says President John McArthur. “The new Staff Awards recognize outstanding contributions in key areas that demonstrate Cameron University’s commitment to the educational, cultural and economic advancement of the communities we serve.”

Staff Award for Excellence in Student Success: Brandy Belew

The Staff Award for Excellence in Student Success recognizes a staff member who promotes a student-centered environment. Brandy Belew, Advisement Specialist in Cameron’s Academic Advising Center, is this year’s recipient. One nominator noted that Belew works “passionately and tirelessly towards retaining her advisees” and referred to her as “diligent in making sure that she has done all that she can to keep her advisees on the right track.” Another wrote, “Brandy’s contributions to student success have been too numerous to ignore” and goes on to cite her key role in Aggie Enrollment Days, her advising work with almost every new freshman entering Cameron, and her successful efforts in increasing freshman retention.

That nominator went on to write, “Brandy’s authenticity is one of her greatest strengths. What she recommends in terms of course selection puts students on the path to academic success. What she recommends in terms of action is honest and achievable. Her student follow-up is what stands out among her peers. She takes it upon herself to contact students to ask important questions and to ensure the students’ needs are being met by her advice.”

Perhaps the student nominator summed up Belew’s influence most succinctly by writing, “She personally helped me get back into academia.”

Staff Award for Excellence in Campus Stewardship: Mandy Husak

The Staff Award for Excellence in Campus Stewardship recognizes significant contributions to the campus community. Mandy Husak, Coordinator of Academic Affairs, is the recipient. One nominator cited Husak as “one of the top three individuals on this campus who is essentially irreplaceable.” The nominator wrote, “She has an incredible amount of institutional memory which makes her the go-to person when we are trying to solve problems or find answers to questions.”  Also noted was Husak’s essential role in adapting the Degree Works program to meet Cameron’s needs and her organizational skills and development of curriculum-tracking procedures.

The nominator concluded by writing, “Mandy regularly uses a combination of critical thinking, problem solving skills and intuition to help us find answers for many things that we do. She is a scientist at heart and approaches her job logically and without bias. She genuinely works to help each of us and does so with a smile and an encouraging word.”

Staff Award for Excellence in Service: David Stone

The Staff Award for Excellence in Service recognizes exemplary contributions in the area of campus or community service. This year’s honoree is David Stone, Automotive Mechanic in the Transportation Department of Physical Facilities. He was nominated by a colleague, who noted Stone’s responsibility for day-to-day maintenance and upkeep of the university’s fleet of vehicles. The nominator wrote, “David is always punctual and works many overtime hours, including nights and weekends, making sure the vehicles are ready for use. David always puts in 110 percent in his efforts.”
