Actor/environmentalist Ed Begley, Jr. will deliver the commencement address to Cameron University’s Class of 2015. The annual graduation ceremony is slated for Friday, May 8 at 7:30 p.m. at Cameron Stadium. Begley will be the final speaker as part of CU's 2014-15 Academic Festival, “Sustainability: Challenges and Opportunities.” Following his address, CU’s 2015 graduates will receive their diplomas. A fireworks display will cap off the occasion. The public is invited to attend free of charge. No tickets are required.
“Following Cameron’s successful focus on sustainability throughout the course of this academic year, we are delighted to feature Ed Begley, Jr. at our upcoming commencement ceremony,” says Cameron President John McArthur. “His success in the entertainment industry and award-winning work in environmentalism will inspire the members of Cameron’s Class of 2015 and motivate them to do what they can to better their communities.”
Turning up at Hollywood events on his bicycle, Begley has been considered an environmental leader in the Hollywood community for many years. He serves on the boards of The Coalition For Clean Air, The Thoreau Institute, and the advisory board of the Union Of Concerned Scientists, among many others.
His work in the environmental community has earned him a number of awards from some of the most prestigious environmental groups in the nation, including the California League of Conservation Voters, the Natural Resources Defense Council, The Coalition for Clean Air, Heal the Bay, Santa Monica Baykeeper, and the Cesar E. Chavez Foundation.
He was star of the hit Planet Green series “Living With Ed,” a look at the day-to-day realities of “living green,” and is the author of “Living Like Ed: A Guide to the Eco-Friendly Life” and “Ed Begley, Jr.’s Guide to Sustainable Living: Learning to Conserve Resources and Manage an Eco-Conscious Life.”
He currently lives near Los Angeles in a self-sufficient home powered by solar energy.
