The Cameron University Department of Music will present the CU Guitar Ensemble in concert on Tuesday, October 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the McCutcheon Recital Hall. Featured guitarists are Ashim Bohara, Kathmandu, Nepal; Trevor Campbell, Jeremy Redbird and Shane Rutherford, Lawton; and Wesley Stafford, Altus. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students, members of the military and senior citizens. Cameron University students, faculty and staff with CU ID are admitted at no charge.
Under the direction of Dr. Kirsten Underwood, the guitar ensemble will perform a wide range of musical styles. The Renaissance style period will be represented by music of lutenist John Johnson, and the late Renaissance/early Baroque by a set of variations by Frescobaldi. The concert includes “Christ who is the Light,” an ancient Lenten hymn by early Baroque composer Samuel Scheidt. From the Baroque period is a fugue by J.S. Bach, and the famous “Canon in D” by Johan Pachelbel. R.G. Meyer has constructed a beautiful guitar arrangement of Beethoven’s “Adagio” from the “Moonlight Sonata,” and the Classical period will also be represented by Thomas Attwood, a pupil of Mozart. Rounding out the program will be “Prelude No. 3” by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos, and Prokofiev’s “Scherzo Humoristique.”
